Why Steven Davis should be Rangers POTY

You may have missed it given how late it was announced and due to the events and celebrations earlier in the day but Steven Davis was awarded the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year on Saturday night.

I’m going to lay my cards on the table early doors, he was my choice for the award despite the very strong claims of others in the squad but the Northern Irishman’s success by no means diminishes the achievements of others.

Allan McGregor had already, deservedly, claimed the SPFL award but James Tavernier and Connor Goldson can rightly feel aggrieved given just how ridiculous their form has been this season.

Just 13 goals conceded in the league, records broken at club, Scottish and British levels – that’s the box ticked for their primary duty of defending – but then you add their contributions at the other end of the park and it gets ridiculous.

They have scored more goals between them than they have conceded in the league, a joke of a statistic.

They maybe aren’t Richard Gough or Terry Butcher and many fans thought they were never Rangers captain material but they have proven – without question – that they are. When the forwards weren’t firing and we needed a clean sheet to win, they were there, against Celtic, Dundee United and countless others, when we need inspiration, they were there – they are both “proper” leaders.

It says it all that the quiet man in the middle is the one that has scooped the gong though and there is a reason for this.

At 36-years old, Steven Davis – along with McGregor - has proven that age is just a number, he may not have played every minute of every game but he has been available for every minute, a true testament to his professionalism, physically, he is incredible.

It’s also not a coincidence that three of our worst performances of the season - Livingston away 0-0, Hamilton away 1-1 and St Mirren away in the League Cup - saw him rested and not in the starting XI.

If ever an incident perfectly summed up an individual it was in the last Old Firm game when he sprinted past Goldson to reel in Odsonne Edouard and execute a perfectly timed, and goal saving tackle, this was after the league was already won, the standard that he sets himself and others perfectly displayed in one moment.

He is the player that dictates our tempo, contributing all over the pitch, remember Alfredo Morelos’s late winner against Livingston? It was Davis’s shot from 12 yards out that was parried to the Colombian international. Week after week he has driven us on this season. Quietly and effectively going about his business.

There is nobody in the team that has been as consistently excellent as Davis, no dips in form, no mistakes, he is clearly a better player than the one that left in 2012, the years competing against some of Europe’s best have made him a better player and we’re the ones that have benefitted.
