Terry Butcher - Statement of Intent

Terry Butcher - Statement of Intent

‘Harry Kane signs for Rangers’

That headline today would be viewed as fanciful. The current England captain signing for Rangers? No chance!

Yet back in the summer of 1986 that’s exactly what Rangers did, they went out and made a statement of intent by acquiring the England captain. For me, the signing of Terry Butcher was the most vital link in the chain of success Graeme Souness was looking to create when he became player-manager and tried to awaken the club from a slumber that had lasted for the best part of a decade.

Immediately installed as our captain, Butcher was a leader, a colossus, a rock at the heart of our defence. And he bought in to the ethos of the club too which further endeared him to me and the rest of the Rangers support.

My abiding memory of him is his towering leap to meet a pinpoint Davie Cooper cross to head in what proved to be the goal that won Rangers the title for the first time in nine years. And I also recall with a shudder the midweek match against Aberdeen when Terry broke his leg and arguably cost us the chance to retain the title – and what would have amounted to 11-in-a-row – and perhaps the European Cup that season too.

He departed on a bit of a downer after he was dropped for a League Cup semi-final against Aberdeen and his last act in a Rangers jersey was to score a spectacular own goal at Tannadice. But that shouldn’t be how we remember the big man. Players I have spoken to from that era wax lyrical about him on and off the park and he deserves his place in the pantheon of our great captains. Without him I don’t think the success we enjoyed in the late 1980s would have been possible.
