Terry Butcher - Inspirational

The Manchester Free Trade Hall RSC, formed in 1966, has entered the debate.

THE CRY OF JUDAS FILLS THE HALL, AND THE BALL FLYS TOWARDS BIG TERRY. WHO SCORES ANOTHER OWN GOAL.

I think it’s fair to say that many of us have somewhat mixed feelings about Terry Butcher; as a player his signing was a statement, his leadership was impressive, and at least his first couple of years at the club were pretty much everything you’d want and expect from a player of that calibre. The goal at Pittodrie that helped clinch the point that brought the tile back to Ibrox will never be forgotten, nor the footage and photographs of the wild celebrations to follow.

So, in the spirit of goodwill, I’m not going to go over the later disappointments and let’s say nothing of the myriad reasons that Butcher’s comments post-retirement have caused resentment and reassessment*.

Because - and a very recent example of this is to be found in the well-intentioned Rangers Pools poll to find a Rangers XI – we’ve now reached the stage where we’re in danger of re-writing history and performing some remarkable flights of fancy in order to punt Big Terry down the list of Rangers defenders. There’s no need to throw shade toward other cult heroes or capable centre halves from throughout our proud history  - and some others from a little further back need more of a case to be made on their behalf – but Terry Butcher is 100% in the top two when it comes to my own lifetime.

Tall, strong, brave, organised, and inspirational: the England captain had it all. He was a perfect signing made by a man with the achievements to match his arrogance, and although it ended badly between Souness and Butcher (‘injury’) it’s almost impossible to imagine Rangers’ return to dominance without that statement of intent.

(*The only post-Rangers moment worth any consideration, far less comment, surrounds the events of Helicopter Sunday. And for that we offer grudging but deserved praise.)
