Rangers 1-2 Celtic - Match Report

It was a disappointing weekend for Rangers, as Malky Thomson's Gers fell to a 2-1 defeat to rivals Celtic at The Rangers Training Centre.

Rachel McLauchlan's long-range drive on 27 minutes was as good as it got for the Gers, as strikes from Kelly Clark (18) and Sarah Ewens (83) gave Celtic their third Old Firm win of the campaign.

Thomson sprang a surprise with his starting 11, as midweek goal hero Carly Girasoli dropped to the bench for Chantelle Swaby. Kirsten Reilly also returned from injury to replace Clare Gemmell.

A tentative start saw Lizzie Arnot have a shot cleared off the line, while Brogan Hay should have done better after a fantastic McLaughlan cross.

Celtic would make Rangers pay moments later when Clark's bulleted a header beyond Jenna Fife to give her side the advantage.

Gers would rally and were back on level terms when McLauchlan's speculative shot beat Chloe Logan from 25-yards.

It would be Logan who was the busier of the two 'keepers following the strike, with the Hoops stopper making a fantastic save from Hay.

The game would settle in the second half, but as the rain bucketed down, both sides would find it hard to create chances in the conditions.

However, once again, Rangers would be caught by a late sucker punch from Celtic.

Fran Alonso's side. as they have done in every Old Firm this season, hit Rangers with a late break and almost took the lead when a looping header forced Fife into a magnificent save, managing to tip an almost certain goal onto the bar.

Rangers joy was short-lived though, as the Hoops top scorer Ewens nodded home from the resulting corner to leave Rangers players shell shocked once more.

The result leaves Rangers in third and a monumental task to qualify for the Champions League, with just a fortnight of the season to play.

This Is Ibrox player of the match: Sam Kerr - a rare bright spark on another dark day. Never stopped going, and anything good came from her.
