Richard Gough is right up there with the best defenders ever to wear our badge, the ultimate nine-in-a-row legend.

He was an outstanding centre-back; calm on the ball in white-hot situations, always looking to play a pass, and timing his tackles to perfection.

He could head the ball; break out of defence and start moves for the forward players, and he popped up with more than a few important goals.

But what I also loved about Richard Gough was his ability to connect with the supporters. He was one of us, and he never hid it.
