Richard Gough - O Captain! My Captain!

It is sometimes difficult to pigeon hole Richard Gough. He wasn't the greatest ball-playing centre half Rangers ever had nor was he always as positionally as sound as we sometimes like to remember. The last-ditch tackle or block make for heroic paeans in British football, whilst ignoring the fact that it generally indicates a failure to read the play in the first instance. Gough's strength however, arguably un-matched by anyone in a Rangers jersey before or since, was as skipper. Handed the responsibility amidst the tumult of Terry Butcher's departure, he took it in his stride, popping up with an Old Firm cup final winner. The success of the 1990s is simply unthinkable without Gough's ability to lead from the front, putting his body on the line time and again and driving his teammates, regardless of age or price tag, to give Rangers their best on the field.

The emotional end of that saga at Tannadice, as Gough lifted his ninth league championship on the spin, still resonates with me and many fans my age. Following the fortunes of a football team will always keep us in that continual state of emotional flux right up into old age however, it is during our formative years when the impact is most acute. Before mortgages and marriage, kids and careers. Gough was a rock-solid constant throughout that time, collecting trophy after trophy.

Battered, often bleeding, but so often victorious. "O Captain! My Captain!"
