Rangers vs Hamilton: Preview

Let’s try and be positive for a minute (As hard is it may be).

Rangers will be locking horns with Brian Rice’s men on Wednesday, Steven Gerrard has been dominant in this fixture and to be quite frank, so he should.

This is Hamilton's 9th season in the Scottish Premiership and they’re always the ‘pundits’ favourite to go back into the Championship. Hamilton, however, are a club who have become the masters of the great escape.

Rangers remain unbeaten in our previous 6 encounters in all competitions, scoring an impressive 22 goals and conceding only 3. So, for this one, it’s very much, David versus Goliath.

Since 2020 came around, Rangers have had mixed results. Defeats and draws have made any hope for a title challenge pretty much impossible. Mathematically the title is very much alive and with that we have hope.

I can see Hamilton taking a similar approach to this game setting up in a similar fashion to the previous few games. It should be a 3-5-2 or a 5-3-2 probably changing between the two when they’re in and out of possession.

Lewis Smith has managed to bag 2 goals against us so far this season for the Accies. That’s almost half his goal tally for the season. He always looks a threat with his explosive pace, He’ll always look to go beyond the defenders looking for that killer through ball to set up an opportunity to score.

On-loan Brighton midfielder Will Collar is someone I haven’t seen a great deal from BUT haven't watched him against that other lot across the city and I thought he had a terrific game, i thought he played defensive midfield i may be mistaken. He broke up play very well and recycled the ball well. He left the field of play at 1-1 after receiving a yellow card.

Luke Southwood is another loanee this time from English Championship side Reading. Despite only having 2 clean sheets in 16 starts he's a goalkeeper who tends to be regularly busy. He produces saves that you don’t think could be possible at times. Playing regularly at Accies at 22 in-between the sticks is going to do wonders for his long term progression. I’m certain Luke will go on to bigger, and better things.

Let’s finally look at the Rangers side, Well first things first. Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield both hobbled off at the defeat to Hearts so, straight off that’s a massive hit to our midfield especially given some of the form of the potential replacements.

I’m sure we will hear at this mornings press conference just exactly what the extent of the injuries and/or knocks are.

Fingers crossed for some good news, although neither looked particularly good.

I think for the moment the side will pretty much pick itself with the exception of the midfield which has become desimated.

It would imagine we would also see a return of Morelos, who sat out of Saturdays defeat to Hearts after returning back from Colombia 24hrs late. He felt the wrath of Gerrard, that’s for sure! We could all see how upset he was before Saturday’s match, Gerrard has given the boy, chance after chance.

Now even with our potentially injury ravished midfield I expect us to be far too good for Hamilton. Gerrard is undefeated in this fixture despite Hamilton being a stuffy outfit.

Hopefully it can reignite our players into life with a good strong win, filled with plenty of goals for Rangers. Hopefully the only talking point of our game will be about our dominant performance, rather than the performance of a poor referee who has missed massive calls, as seems to have been the case of late.

Let’s hope the supporters attending on Wednesday back the side in a positive manner. Regardless of opposition a full blast of the ‘Blue sea of Ibrox’ gets the blood pumping.

You and I have a massive part to play on Wednesday night, Loud and Proud!

After all, we still (whether you believe it or not) are in the hunt for a league trophy, regardless of how unlikely that may seem.
