Rangers vs Celtic - Match Preview

Tomorrow is the fifth Old Firm Derby of the season. Zero defeats, three wins and one draw, how good is it to say that?

We will once again be at home watching, with a glimmer of hope that next time the Old Firm comes around we will be in those stands cheering the champions on, it’s only a matter of time now surely?

Scott Arfield, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun will be missing for this clash tomorrow, as well as those suspended due to the Covid breach earlier in the season. Steven Gerrard confirmed in yesterday’s press conference that Jack Simpson will be starting in Helander’s place at the heart of the defence. The biggest miss for us will be Scott Arfield in the middle of midfield in my opinion, his energy and constant movement usually opens teams up, something that we particularly missed in the St. Johnstone games.

The interesting question is whether Scott Wright starts on the wing, over Joe Aribo (who will most likely move infield) or Ianis Hagi. Wright has been impressive when he’s come off the bench or started this season. He has got a real sense of creativity and he’s clearly someone who’s not afraid to try something to beat his man. I would absolutely fancy Wright one on one against the likes of Greg Taylor, Diego Laxalt or Jonjoe Kenny.

Rangers have just three games to go till the end of the season, one that we can go unbeaten if we avoid defeat against Celtic, Livingston and Aberdeen. It’s a feat that’s been somewhat downplayed due to our performance in the cup competitions, but you can’t question to mentality the team have had this season, a far cry from what we season in seasons gone by.

Celtic reportedly have James Forrest back for selection, the winger has been missing for most of the season, much like his teammates to be fair. If Forrest starts it will certainly give Borna Barisic a thing or two to think about, particularly how often he gets forward.

The last time Rangers lost a league game against Celtic was September 2019, it’s almost a fixture that has become more comfortable each time we’ve played them. However Celtic will have a fire in their belly tomorrow, all they have left to play for this season is to stop us from going unbeaten.

The Old Firm game will be live on RangersTV at 12 pm tomorrow for season ticket holders. Alternatively, it will be shown on Sky Sports, most likely with the usual dross commentary that we’ve had to put up with for the last few years. Let’s at least hope that Ally McCoist joins them and lightens the mood up a little.

Mon the Gers!
