Mark Hateley - Fear In The Opposition

The greatest characteristic you could use to describe Mark Hateley above all else is fear.

Above his blistering power, pace, deadly left foot, runs and jumps timed to perfection,  the ability to perform in the most important of games, his rolled-up sleeves and flowing locks, what Mark Hateley inspired was fear in the opposition.

Just ask Aberdeen who in May 91 he single handle ended that club as a credible challenger ever again or our dear neighbours who when faced with his sheer presence alone and facing questions over his once-great strength, Hateley, unlike Smason, proved it had not dissapererd with his hair and help create the goal that all but sealed our 9IAR in the sweetest of places.

He wasn't always so loved, he had to work for the fans appreciation, as his early place came at the expense of Golden Balls himself, he did just that as he had throughout his career he showed his class. A scorer in the Maracana, Milan Derbys, cup finals, league deciders, Old Firm games and European nights, no stage was too big for Attila.

Englands number 9 in Mexico 86 but to us, he will always be 10.
