Best Of The Rest - Rangers' POTY Clean Sweep

It’s all about the Rangers - Four Rangers players nominated for SFWA player of the year nominations.

The Scottish Football Writers' Association (SWFA) player of the year nominations have been released and it’s a clean sweep for the champions. James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Steven Davis and Allan McGregor take up all four nominations for the award, one that’s been dominated by our rivals for some time. Interesting the last Rangers player to pick up this award was David Weir in 2010.

It’s of course been an outstanding season for Rangers, domestically we are still unbeaten in the league with two games to go, which will be a fantastic achievement if we go all the way, which I fully expect we should.

So why have these four players been been nominated for the award? Let’s look at each of them, what they’ve done this season and make a case for why each of them could scoop the award.

James Tavernier

Captain fantastic, he has been phenomenal this season. Not only will he lift the Scottish Premiership trophy in a few weeks time he can still beat his own goal record in a season, which current stands at 14 goals in the 2018/19 season.

Tavernier was unstoppable post injury, bursting forward and getting amongst the goals and of course playing a vital part in assisting his team mates in their own goal scoring quests.

The attacking full back has also been a part of the best defensive team this season keeping a total of 19 clean sheets. He has arguably put to bed those arguments that he cannot defend.

Tavernier has also shown his leadership qualities this season and exactly why Steven Gerrard has entrusted him with the captain’s armband. I for one cannot wait to see him lift that Scottish Premiership trophy.

Passing accuracy per game: 47.4 (79%)

Connor Goldson

Mr. Reliable, Connor Goldson has not missed a game for Rangers this season and have been absolutely faultless in each of them. The centre back has shown exactly why Gerrard has faith in him that he can play alongside pretty much anyone and still keep clean sheets.

I can’t think of defender that’s had this good of a season in a Rangers shirt, particular remaining unbeaten in the league and putting in some incredible performances in Europe. In 36 league games this season Goldson has been a part of 24 clean sheets, that says it all.

It’s even more incredible to see Goldson play every minute this season when you consider just a few years ago he had a career threatening injury that may have never seen he moved to Ibrox.

As well as Tavernier, Goldson has shown loyalty, passion and leadership this season. He’s also showed togetherness along with all the squad in coming out to defend teammate Glen Kamara in the racist incident that occurred against Slavic Prague. For me Connnor is a worthy candidate for this award.

Steven Davis

The Ulster Xavi, at the ripe old age of 36 Steven Davis has also been phenomenal this season. The ever present midfielder has been vital in the middle of the park, single handedly dictated tempo of games and passed teams of the park.

Davis has been the driving force of our midfield especially when we missed the likes of Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield through injury. He’s like a fine wine and has just got better with age, you could make a strong argument than him being better now than he was in 2012.

What’s impressed me about Davis this season is how he’s been used in our midfield. Constantly breaking down play, intercepting the opposition and finding the right passes forward to send us on the attack, legend has it that N’Golo Kante has posters of Davis on his bedroom walls.

He’s another solid choice for this award and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win it. It would certainly be the icing on the cake for a man who has had a cracking career not only at club level but at international level too, reaching 126 for Northern Ireland and becoming the most capped British player in history.

Allan McGregor

Where do you start with Allan McGregor, he’s been unbelievable between the sticks this season, a total of 16 clean sheets in the league and a collection of outrageous saves particularly against Celtic and on the European stage have put the spotlight on the veteran keeper.

At 39 years old, McGregor is still at the top of his game. Single handedly keeping Rangers in Europe this season and contributing to our unbeaten league season, nothing that McGregor does surprises me.

Cast your mind back to his save against Leigh Griffiths earlier in the season, that may have been the point where we all believed that we could remain unbeaten for the season, there was not beating McGregor. Fast forward to his save in the 90th minute against Slavia Prague, it may have been one of the best saves I’ve ever seen.

For me McGregor is the least likely from this list to scoop the award but I absolutely agree he should be in the running. One of his best seasons in a Rangers shirt, league champions once again, he’s living the dream.
