Andy Goram’s place in Rangers’ history is best summarised by the moniker affectionately bestowed upon him by teammates and supporters: The Goalie. After joining in 1991 Goram was the almost-impenetrable last line of defence during the trophy-laden 9-in-a-row era and in 2001 was voted as the greatest goalkeeper ever to represent the club. Despite his short stature Andy was a remarkable shot-stopper and incredible in one-on-one situations. Goram was voted both the Scottish Football Writers' and Players’ Player of the Year at the end of the 1992/93 season which saw arguably his finest hour in a famous victory vs Leeds United at Elland Road. Perhaps the greatest compliment however came not from a teammate but from an opponent when Tommy Burns famously said “it will say on my tombstone: ‘Andy Goram broke my heart’” and it was match-winning performances in the biggest games of the season that will forever leave Andy Goram with a place in the hearts of Rangers fans for years to come.
