Ally McCoist - Top 5 Goals

Ally McCoist - Top 5 Goals

We are now at the end of the Rangers Legends Challenge articles and what better way to finish them with the legendary Ally McCoist. Before I waffle on about Super Ally, I just want to say a huge thank you to all of the brilliant contributors and to all of you that have either read, shared or interacted with the articles.

I asked our followers on the @thisisibrox twitter page to describe Ally's career in just one word. Super, god, hero, goals, fearsome, sensational, untouchable and legend were just some of what the Rangers fans responded with. He will always be held in high regard throughout the Rangers support.

I thought that I would do something a little bit different to every who has contributed to this challenge. I'm going to talk you through my top five goals that Super Ally scored for Rangers, let's go!

5. Hearts, 1996 - Scottish League Cup Final

One of the first cup finals that I remember watching and being mesmerised by Rangers team, in particular Ally McCoist and Paul Gascoigne who got the goals on the day.

Two McCoist goals to pick from in this game and I've decided to go with the second goal, because that's Ally McCoist, in the right place at the right time. Throughout my time playing football I always kept that in mind, think outside the box and be in the right place, this effectively got me playing at a decent enough level, thanks Ally.

4. Celtic, 1998 - Scottish Cup Semi-Final

One of my most memorable McCoist goals, the defending from Stuart McCall, the pass from Jonas Thern, the cross from Jorg Albertz and the incredible movement from Super Ally was just perfection. I think what made this goal more special was his celebration, I remember seeing the photograph of that celebration growing up and remembering I want to be him.

McCoist just made the header look so easy, he was a natural in front of goal. It's amazing to think that this was his 27th goal in the Old Firm Derby.

3. Celtic, 1992 - Scottish Cup Semi-Final

Rangers had won the Scottish Cup for 11 years and hadn't scored against Celtic in that competition for some time. David Robertson being sent off in the first half made the task an even greater for us. But just before half time Stuart McCall played a pass into the path of McCoist who cooly slotted his shot passed the Celtic goalkeeper.

The celebrations were wild, McCoist was nearly in tears, to this day it still remains one of the greatest McCoist moments in a Rangers shirt, I'm sure you will agree.

2. Hibernian, 1993 - Scottish League Cup Final

When you ask any Rangers fan about McCoist's best goals, this one is always mentioned. Not only was Super Ally always in the right place at the right time, he had a spectacular talent to find the back of the net, even when his back is to goal.

McCoist started on the bench in this Cup Final but it's his goal which is fondly remember. The cross found its way to McCoist whose touch took it away from goal, an overhead kick followed in which the keeper had no chance of saving. A truly remarkable goal by a truly remarkable goalscorer.

1. Leeds United, 1992 - UEFA Champions League

The Battle of Britain, a tie still talked about to this day. Two excellent sides which the better one coming out on top. As goals go for this game, Mark Hateley's effort was hard to be topped, but the sheer brilliance of McCoist's goal from one end of the pitch to the other will be remember by Rangers fans for decades.

The Leeds attack broke down and the ball found it's way to Ian Durrant on the half way line, Durrant played the ball into Mark Hateley's feet whose first touch took him out wide. Hateley they pulled out a cross like you've never seen before, Ally McCoist who had peeled off to the back post headed the ball across goal into the far corner, stunning.

In my opinion this is the best goal that Ally McCoist scored for Rangers.
