Ally McCoist - Legend then, legend now, legend forever

Ally McCoist - Legend then, legend now, legend forever.

Back in the late 1980s when my mates and I played football with jumpers for goalposts, you would find me stationed in and around the opposition box and the reason for that was I was looking to copy the goalscoring exploits of Alistair Murdoch McCoist.

Ally was my idol and he was coming to the fore when I started to become intoxicated by football. After a couple of rough years at the start of his Rangers career he would eventually show that he was a razor-sharp predator. In my opinion, nobody has come close to him as a number nine for Rangers since and it’s hard to imagine anyone equalling never mind bettering the staggering 355 goals he scored for the club.

There is no doubt that the success the club enjoyed when Ally was scoring his glut of goals would not have been as silver-laden had it not been for the regularity of Ally’s goals. His partnership with Mark Hateley is one of the deadliest in the club’s history and I got an extra buzz going to games when I saw Ally’s name on the teamsheet. You go to games to see goals and Ally’s ability to find the net with breath-taking regularity pretty much guaranteed that.

I’ve been fortunate to speak to Ally recently for a book I’m working on. It is often said that meeting or speaking to your heroes can leave you disappointed but that certainly wasn’t the case with Ally. Shooting the breeze with him on the current Rangers team and our expectations for the season was a phenomenal experience. And the fact he took time to praise my writing was a nice touch too!

Ally McCoist – legend then, legend now, legend forever.
