Ally McCoist - European Golden Boot

Super Ally is one of those Rangers players who just put a smile on your face whenever you think about him. Whether it’s a goal you remember or a moment, Ally McCoist has had an impact as a Rangers player not many people can say they had.

Ally McCoist signed for his boyhood heroes in 1983 from Sunderland and it was a 15 year spell that resulted in 355 Goals in 571 Appearances and 20 Trophies at Rangers.

McCoist made his debut in August 1983 against St Mirren and in March 1984 scored an incredible hat trick in the League Cup Final victory against Celtic as Rangers won 3-2. McCoist was one of the few bright points of a poor Rangers side before Graeme Souness took over as manager in 1986.

McCoist was the top goalscorer as Rangers won their first League title in 11 Years in the 1986-87 season and carried on his scoring run before being dropped from the side after the big name signings of Maurice Johnston & Mark Hateley

When Walter Smith took over as manager in 1991, McCoist returned to the side and scored 34 times in the league during the 1991-92 season winning the European Golden Boot making him the first Scot to do so. The following 1992-93 season, McCoist scored 49 goals in 52 games to win the European Golden Boot again before a horrific leg break on Scotland duty prematurely ended his season.

McCoist returned and scored a remarkable overhead kick in the 1993 League Cup Final against Hibs however struggled to solidify his place in the team due to other injuries and it wasn’t until the 1995-96 season when McCoist featured more as Rangers secured 8 In A Row.

The following 1996-97 season was massive and McCoist played a huge part as Rangers secured their 9th Title In A Row with McCoist securing his place in Ibrox folklore. 1997-98 was McCoist’s last season at Ibrox but it ended rather poorly as Celtic stopped 10 In A Row and a poor defeat in the Scottish Cup Final to Hearts meant McCoist didn’t get the fairytale ending he deserved in a Rangers shirt.

Ally McCoist is Rangers All Time Record Goalscorer and it is very unlikely his record will ever be topped. The greatest goalscorer in Scottish Football History and one of the most iconic Rangers legends of all time. That is Super Ally.
